“Being a new mother is supposed to be the happiest time of your life, but postpartum depression comes for a time, but trust that it will not last forever.” – Judy Dippel

Postpartum is a Latin word that is the sum of two-words Post (“After”) + Partum (“giving birth”). The time after childbirth is called postpartum. There are some changes that women feel after childbirth, feeling sad, empty, and hopeless for more than two weeks. This postpartum depression affects human behavior and mental and physical health. In this situation, you feel unconnected to your child or have no feeling for child care. There are many other disorders that a new mother experiences first time in her marital life like bulk hair fall and hair thinning.

What causes for Postpartum hair loss?

During pregnancy time you may experience some amazing feelings about your thick and strong hair. You feel different as a baby is born and after delivery hair fall or hair loss starts with increased speed. Normally you lose 100 hairs daily and after some time this count goes to 600 hairs daily. This is due to abrupt changes in hormones in your body after the postpartum. There are four stages of hair growth which are listed below

  • Anagen: Growing Phase
  • Catagen: Transition Phase
  • Telogen: Resting Phase
  • Exogen: Shedding Phase

Estrogen is the main hormone that affects postpartum hair loss. During pregnancy, the estrogen level is high which keeps your hair in the anagen (growth phase) of the hair growth cycle. Your hair looks dense and thick in this duration due to which you face less hair loss. After delivery, the Estrogen level starts decreasing, and due to which your all thick and strong hair that was in the anagen phase moves towards the resting phase, and then the Exogen phase. In this exogen phase, your hair starts falling out, and this is called Postpartum hair loss.

When Does Postpartum Hair Loss Starts?

Postpartum hair loss does not start immediately after your childbirth. Most hair loss occurs after the completion of other postpartum symptoms. You will notice peak hair loss after the four to five-month of baby birth. The occurrence of this type of hair loss is different in different mother. If it happens to you, then don’t worry it is very common for every new mother. This issue is called shedding in which hair fall increases.

If you find surplus strands of hair fall up to 600 hairs daily in the shower drain, then you are facing shedding problems. By 6 months postpartum, the hair loss should decrease to the pre-pregnancy stage. If you notice that, your hair falls don’t come to normal routine by the 6 month, then you should go to doctor as this may be any other health issue.
