ISSUES

Dear Student Leaders and Advisors,

UNPRECEDENTED events have impacted us on so many levels. The WAY higher educational institutions RESPOND to these dynamic times is CRITICAL!

Creating safe and engaged cultures for college in the virtual and in-person the environment is key to molding our future.

The media is quick to highlight incidents of abuse in higher education, putting colleges at risk of litigation and lawsuits that can cost millions and cripple your college.

College incivility, in all its forms- harassment, discrimination, hazing, sexual assault, and poor cyber-conduct, is an epidemic that affects every campus around the country. As the nation’s leading institutions, colleges are often in the spotlight when incidents like these occur on their campuses or in their virtual school community.

The Pandemic

Due to COVID-19, colleges have had to navigate new learning conditions like having to transition to more of an online platform.

These dynamic and socially unrestful times require every institute to foster a Fearless Listening TM campus culture, and Fearless Listening Leadership TM training to address emerging issues that have been ignored previously.

Now universities have to determine how to teach incoming freshmen best practices for civility, student engagement, and other socially responsible behaviors. This includes ways to redefine and navigate in this new learning environment.

By building student engagement and integrating civility for students who have opposing viewpoints, students and universities will have a national and global impact.

Our solution

We offer modified training based on the highly successful work that we have done to reach students who have opposing viewpoints and who feel lost and disenfranchised from the new narrative of social injustices that is at the forefront.

The training teaches students how to be heard by the authorities of the campuses who seem to have turned a deaf ear to their sentiments. It also promotes student engagement that integrates this new era of students coming together to create change.

Student Engagement and Civility in Cyberlearning Environments

As severe as these circumstances can be as ‘stand-alone’ challenges for any campus, they are more than ever, exacerbated by shifts in the campus environment. The gradual change from in-person to virtual learning has not eliminated the unrest that arises from such harsh realities but has allowed even more uncertainty for schools that have adopted hybrid models of virtual and in-person campus environments.

Along with these challenges, students also fall victim to criticism when they choose to express their discontentment for how they’ve been treated.  Their expression is often communicated through social media and other virtual means, broadening their exposure to additional potential attacks.

The Critical Role of Professional Development

Fostering civility, personal civic responsibility, and student engagement, during a time when so many individuals engage in poor cyber-conduct will help administrators address and resolve issues that have been previously ignored.

It requires creating trust between students, administrators, and faculty that can only be achieved by integrating Fearless Listening TM. It is also important to create best practices for these key and crucial conversations.

I want to encourage the conversations and voices of students.  I want to teach students that there is value in their decision to listen to voices that are unlike their own, yet to meet those voices with civility, kindness, and engagement.

From marshaling the unrest that will precede and follow the election season, to helping students debrief this unprecedented time in history, there is value in being part of campus.   Faculty and administration must engage in Fearless Listening TM to allow their students to integrate their voices into their studies and campus experience. Their stories must be told!

Without guidance, fostering student engagement and civility can seem daunting. My team and I are dedicated to providing resources that are proven to work. You can find resources that are tailored to:

STUDENT WORKSHOPS

FEARLESS LISTENING ™  & CIVILITY  CAMPUS WORKSHOPS

Traciana Graves“Say Something Beautiful:Civility in Action and Fearless Listening ™  programs leverage song, storytelling, experiential learning, and multimedia to encourage students to find their unique voice and to listen to voices unlike their own.  These workshops address the key pain points that colleges and universities are facing, along with the rest of the world. However, the workshops focus more pointedly on how to address these challenges from the college environment.

Current events and movements like #BlackLivesMatter, the COVID-19 pandemic, social responsibility, online cyber misconduct, turbulent political climate with upcoming elections, race relations, and more are the headline of every news story.  They are on the minds of half of the working population, and they are in the hearts and souls of college and university students who stand tall on the front lines of protests for various causes.

During the current pandemic, the challenges of instilling appropriate social distancing guidelines are critical and this population is already clearly ignoring this norm with crippling consequences.

The program is particularly geared toward the needs and interests of students and advisors active in:

  •       Residence Life
  •       Greek Life
  •       Athletics
  •       Women’s Studies

  •       Health and Wellness
  •       Counseling
  •       Diversity/Tolerance Councils

5 KEYS TO BUILDING STRONG VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON COMMUNITIES

The Fearless Listening College Community must be determined to create unity, the ability to be heard, and to creatively come together to broker change that is needed.

There is a harsh era of intolerance that plagues the campus environment.  We see this evidenced even more as students across the nation have stood on both sides of the social distancing spectrum.  We watch media and other reporters try to capture the unrest that students are facing related to the COVID-19 pandemic, social responsibility, online cyber misconduct, turbulent political climate with upcoming elections, race relations, and more.

A large part of why this unrest is prevalent is the college community is its unyielding willingness to listen to voices unlike their own.

Resolving these challenges is particularly difficult at this time due to the various focus-areas that college students are compelled to address. However, failure to bring these things to the forefront will undoubtedly result in much more impactful consequences.

Fearless Listening College Community is a program that encompasses listening to promote civility. This highly engaging presentation tackles critical campus-related issues, such as creating a safe environment that appreciates, respects, and encompasses all demographics. Traciana shares strategies to empower students to share their unique voices in their various roles around campus, as they simultaneously benefit from a campus where their peers are doing the same.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will appreciate how engaging  kindness and inclusiveness best practices benefits them personally and academically
  • Participants will be able to articulate critical consequences and legal ramifications of lack of civility and its various forms can take, including hazing, harassment, sexual assault and cyberbullying.
  • Students will learn to the importance of fostering key partnerships with student groups and organizations invested in creating an environment of kindness and inclusion where all students have a stake in campus life
  • Learners will develop 3 strategies to become Upstanders who stand up for inclusion and speak out against lack of campus kindness and understand their civic responsibilities.
  • Participants will learn 3 ways that  diverse backgrounds to find common threads of connection

This is a time of hope and new possibilities that will require a fearless listening culture on campus as new insights and incidents emerge under this new lens of scrutiny.

Campus and students will need to identify what should be changed while also being in tune with the values of their college culture to withstand the turbulence of this election season.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Fearless Listening Leadership

The Fearless Listening Leadership TM approach shared during this workshop is based on highly successful work we’ve done to reach students who have opposing viewpoints and who feel lost and disenfranchised from the new narrative of social injustices that is at the forefront.

Leaders who experience difficulty quieting the voices of frustrated and intolerant students will learn that the objective is not to silence the voices, but to empower them. Fearless Listening Leadership TM is the most viable means to deter the negative consequences of failing to listen.

Social media and other national platforms are eager to show incidents of abuse in higher education, putting colleges at risk of litigation and lawsuits that can cost millions and cripple your college. This type of undesirable recognition yields a lack of trust from the community, lost jobs, tainted reputations, failed academic leadership, poor team collaboration and a potential decline in student enrollment to avoid negative association.

The workshop will help leaders learn what it takes to remove their biases as they listen fearlessly to the outcries of students. We target high anxiety and uncover the greater role that leaders must play, making this training necessary and critical.

When leveraged correctly, students, administrators, faculty, and the entire college campus culture will benefit profoundly as they learn to exercise Fearless Listening Leadership TM.

Building a Fearless Listening College Campus

College campuses are facing issues of harassment, discrimination, hazing, sexual assault, poor cyber-conduct, the COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest, race relations, and more. As the nation’s leading institutions, colleges are often in the spotlight when incidents like these occur on their campuses or in their virtual school community.

To address these issues, colleges must seek professional development.

Integrating Fearless Listening Leadership TM into the university culture will result in Building a Fearless Listening College Campus.

There is an urgent need for guidance in creating college campus cultures that are fearless, and that listen deeply to what is being said that in the past had not been heard.

The campus culture is capable of creating unity in innovation, along with inspired, safe, and engaged students.

Leadership must ensure that they are not only listening but that they are clear on how to broker all of the divisiveness.  They must also have the necessary training to find new ways to broker student engagement and amongst their peers.

The Building a Fearless Listening College Campus workshop teaches students how to be heard by campus authorities who seem to have turned a deaf ear to their voices. It also promotes student engagement that integrates this new era of students coming together to create change.

Leaders will learn that the objective is not to silence the voices, but to empower them.

These risks negatively impact the university’s ability to serve and guide students when the campus leadership is not doing the deep work to lead from the top down– especially with so many challenges.

The workshop will help leaders learn what it takes to remove their biases as they listen fearlessly to the outcries of students. We target high anxiety and uncover the greater role that leaders must play, making this training necessary and critical.

When leveraged correctly, students, administrators, faculty, and the entire college campus culture will benefit profoundly as they learn to Build a Fearless Listening College Campus
